How to Wash Kids' Clothes So Colors and Fabric Last Longer
Kids’ clothes face colour, stains, and endless cycles. A few steady habits protect both fabric and your budget.
## Before the first wear
Wash once. It softens finishes and removes residual processing from the factory or store.
## Sort with a light touch
- Darks and bright reds/oranges separate from whites when new
- Close zips and empty pockets
- Turn printed or embellished pieces inside out
## Water temperature
Prefer **cold or mild** for everyday cottons. Hot water ages elastic and can push dyes out faster.
## Detergent
- Use a measured amount — more soap is not cleaner clothes
- Skip heavy bleach on coloured kidswear
- For stains, treat gently before the main wash instead of harsh scrubbing every time
## Machine vs hand
Both work. If using a machine:
- Gentle or delicate cycle for softer garments
- Avoid overloading — clothes need room to move
- Skip high-heat dryer when you can; air dry in shade to protect colour
## Drying and storage
- Shade is kinder to bright dyes than harsh noon sun for hours
- Fully dry before folding to avoid musty smells
- Do not leave damp piles in the bucket overnight
## Stains (the parent reality)
Mud, food, and art class happen. Blot, do not rub hard. Rinse cold for many protein or food stains, then wash. If a stain remains, repeat — repeated harsh bleach often hurts fabric more than the stain.
## Quick routine that works
1. Wash new pieces once before wear
2. Cold/mild cycle, right detergent amount
3. Inside-out for prints
4. Air dry in shade when possible
5. Size up and rotate so the same three tees are not destroyed in a month
